Standard elevators are equipped with an exhaust fan to circulate air within the cab. The exhaust fan is mounted on top of the car, and is responsible for extracting air from the elevator cab and hoistway. The supply of air is pulled into the cab via the toe kick, triggered by negative pressure caused by the exhaust and air exchange when the doors open. In some cases, an elevator may have a separate exhaust fan.

In addition to ventilation, elevators should also feature fans. The air in an elevator is relatively dry, and the time spent in the confined space may not be conducive to a pleasant ride. Elevators must also maintain a high level of air quality to prevent discomfort. Besides, the elevator blower fan will ensure that the hoistway is circulating air and prevent harmful gas residue from accumulating in the hoistway. If the existing fan cannot maintain the required circulation of air, the elevator could result in anoxic movement.
